In "Women's Cardiovascular Health Every Woman's Guide to Her Heart," Dr. Gopal explains the the cardiovascular system in a very easy-to-understand way. She cautions about the symptoms of a heart attack and that these are different in women than in men. I found Dr. Gopal's book to be very helpful in my quest to find answers to questions I have about CAD. She also describes preventive methods that every woman with a family history of cardiovascular disease should be aware of. While I've looked at the American Heart Association's web site, it doesn't pull all the information together in a concise format as this book does. Well worth the read for women, and the men in their lives, who have symptoms or are suffering from cardiovascular disease.
Purchased Dr. Gopal's Book in advance of my first appointment for a consultation and post heart attack management. I was very taken in by Dr. Gopal's accolades, awards, interests and experiences as lauded by The Dallas Heart Group. I felt that "book" was little more than a brochure and provided very little new or constructive information over what is readily available from other sources for free. The American Heart Association and Go Red for Women Websites offer great information at no cost!
When I met with Dr. Gopal she seemed personable ... however, when I had questions about the medications that she had selected, she answered my questions - but "fired" me as a patient via CERTIFIED MAIL. She wrote in my medical records that I had stopped taking my medications and was "non-compliant". I never stopped taking the medications that she wanted me to take, I only asked her questioned her about them and wanted to know what would happen if I stopped taking them. Several of the medications cost over $100.00 per month which gets expensive and if you live on a budget you have to make choices - right?
If you read her book, you are led to believe that she has a special interest in caring for young female heart attack patients as she is part of the VIRGO Study which looks at that special subgroup of patients. However, it is my opinion that despite her appearances to the contrary, when the going gets tough, she is more than happy to "fire" a patient. This was disconcerting to me as I sought her out specifically for the reasons that she later, in my opinion, seems to have used again me.
So, buyer beware ... your money and time are better spent making a donation to the American Heart Association and reading their information for FREE!
