In Growing Up Youngest, Doris Altman Schwartz enchants readers with her tales of growing up as the youngest of eleven children raised by a widowed mother whose husband, the successful portrait painter Solomon Altman, died of pneumonia soon after Doris was born. The culture of London Doris describes during the 1920s, the family's migration to Brooklyn, New York, in the 1930s, and the fortitude of a mother struggling to keep the family together supported only by the meager wages of her older children weave together into a marvelous story.

I just finished reading Growing Up Youngest and thoroughly enjoyed every word. My mother and father grew up during the same era as the author, so I thought I knew what it was like during the great depression. How wrong I was! While their stories taught me about what the depression was like in rural Oklahoma, Doris' book taught me what it was like in urban New York and Great Britain. Her stories were fascinating tales of life in a large family led by a strong matriarch, and I hated to finish it, knowing I'd miss the family I had come to know and love through the author's eyes. I highly recommend this book to anyone who yearns to know more about our history or enjoys memoirs.

Reading about what life was like for a family of 13 in London in the 1920s, bound for America, and the growing up experiences all the members had upon settling in the States was absolutely marvelous! It's a quick read and is chronological and I couldn't wait to keep turning the pages to find out what happened next... oh, what I would do to meet this woman and have tea with her! What a splendid experience! I am so very grateful to have had the opportunity to follow this wonderful voyage!
What a life this author embarked on as a young child. A very enjoyable, touching and quick read which leaves an indelible impression. This enchanting memoir is about the trials and tribulations of growing up poor and the youngest with a very strong-willed widowed mother and eleven living siblings in London, England and then Brooklyn, New York.
In the first chapter, the author describes herself as a young girl living in a house in the East End of London. The front room, which was originally her father's art studio before he died becomes the family Grocery store and later a men's clothing shop run by a politican. On Saturdays Politicans would meet and drink in the shop. The author remembers one member in particular,a pudgy little man who used the outhouse on a regular basis. He was Winston Churchill.
Growing up placed a heavy financial burden on the authors widowed mother. When they came of age the children worked to contribute to the household. In addition, there were many enjoyable times. The eight sisters loved to perform for eachother. Singing, dancing and laughter prevailed through the house. When each child married, families would get together in their Mother's kitchen in Brooklyn reliving stories, singing, dancing and having fun.
This book is about perseverance, and the intricacies of family, sibling rivalry, relationships, jealousies, love, loneliness and friendships made. All written with passion, honesty and humor.
"Growing Up The Youngest" shows how Doris Altman Schwartz becomes the strong, intelligent and very talented artistic woman she is today.
